This is a fedora made in a Bavarian hunting hat style made by Biltmore of Canada.  This hat is made in a rich green toned velour that Biltmore branded as “Golden Pheasant Velour”.  The crown has a matching roped integrated band around its base.  It is decorated with a chamois beard at the side and a large “gamsbart” at the back, which translates to “Chamois beard”.   A chamois is a type of mountain goat and its “beard” is a tuft of hair that grows on the goat’s lower neck.  This hair was traditionally worn by Bavarians as a hunting trophy, but it has become a part of their traditional dress.  The hair is affixed to a metal holder with a pin.  This is a quite full example, measuring 4 1/2” in height including the metal holder and 6 1/2”  in width across the top. The sweatband is gold stamped “Canadian Velour”.  The lining is stamped in gold and red with an illustration of a pheasant and with “Biltmore Golden Pheasant Velour Made in Canada”.  The size tag reads 7 3/8 - it measures about 23” around the sweat band.  The brim measures 2” in width and the crown measures 5” in height at the side front.  The hat is in excellent condition - pre-owned, but very well cared for.

Biltmore was founded in 1917 and was Canada’s premier hat maker, rival to Stetson.  In fact, after Stetson (Canada) went on a Canadian acquisition binge during the 1960s, Biltmore was able to eliminate its main competitor (Stetson) by buying it in 1970.  In 1982, after Biltmore filed bankruptcy, Stetson (USA) bought the assets of Biltmore, before they themselves filed Chapter 11 in 1986.  The Biltmore brand was withdrawn from the market from 1982 until 1988, when a group of Canadian investors revived it.  Biltmore has always been a quality maker, even producing the Dobbs and Knox brands in Canada.

This is a great looking hat - nice quality, wonderful decoration, attractive colour!
