This is a vintage mens pork pie hat, a style popular during the 1940s into the 50s, often associated with jazz tenor saxophonist Lester Young.  The pork pie hat is made in the form of a flat top fedora with an upturned brim.  This pork pie hat is decorated with a wide grosgrain band around the base of the crown that has a stylized “bow” at the back.  The crown has an indented top.  The hat is lined in white satin and is stamped with “Adam Royal Created By America’s Famous Hatter V”.  The size label reads “7 1/4” and the sweatband is stamped in black with “Adam Royal Created By America’s Famous Hatter “.  The colour on this pork pie hat is a dark brown, very attractive.

Age: 1940s / 50s

Maker: Adam Hats was founded in 1924 by Elias Lustig and grew to a chain of 97 stores in addition to being a manufacturer.  Adam Hats were very popular during the 40s and 50s as they sponsored broadcasts of boxing matches and a radio show. The Adam hat was usually priced under competitive brands, but some of their pork pie hat and fedora lines were equal in quality to Stetson and Dobbs hats.

Material:  Fur felt

Size: 7 1/4 (large).  The opening measures 22 3/8” around the sweatband, and 6 3/4” by 7 3/4” across.

Condition: It is in very clean condition with no wear or staining - surprising that a hat of this age has survived in such nice shape.

This is a very nice quality hat in a hard to find pork pie hat style, a very stylish model!
