Vintage 1960s Mod Black Striped Silk Devore Velvet Dress - Bianchini Ferier M

$250.00

Brand Poppy's Vintage Clothing

This is a fabulous quality 60s era black dress featuring fabric made by venerable Lyons silk house Bianchini Ferier.  Bianchini Ferier was founded in 1880 by Charles Bianchini and from the beginning was known for quality silk.  They created fabrics that are standard today, but for which they hold the original copyright - charmeuse georgette, crepe Romaine amongst others.  They contracted famous French Fauvist painter Raoul Dufy, who first designed textiles for Paul Poiret in 1911, to create printed fabrics for them - Dufy created bold Fauve styled florals for Bianchini from 1912 into the 1920s.  Bianchini became well known for supplying silk velvets and metal brocades to the Parisian haute couture fashion houses.

This dress has a high rounded neckline, cuffed long sleeves and is made in a mid-thigh length shift style.  The fabric is a devoré or burn-out velvet in a wavy vertical stripe.  The base fabric is semi-transparent and the exterior fabric is affixed to a fine quality black cotton slip - the upper bodice and sleeves are the only areas that are semi-transparent in appearance.  The velvet has a sheen to it, with a reflective flecking in it.  I’m unsure of the fabric, but being by Bianchini Ferier, it is most likely silk, but surely, if not silk, a very expensive fabric.  The dress closes at the back with a nylon zipper and the cuffs close with four matching covered buttons and loops.
