Brand Poppy's Vintage Clothing
This is an absolutely fabulous vintage 1940s dress made in a sleeveless halter styled ball gown or party dress. This vintage 1940s dress was made by Mme Malouf of Montreal, a well known couturier active during the 1930s and 40s. The dress is made with a dropped waist and a full circle cut skirt. The body of the dress is gathered in horizontal pleats. It is made of black taffeta with a black tulle/netting overlay that is punctuated with blue sequin floral appliqués. The halter neck is also decorated with sequins. The bust has a built-in bra, that was modified to fit the interior at the back of the gown. This vintage 1940s dress was posed with a crinoline to achieve a full skirt, but no crinoline is supplied.
Label: Original by Mme. Malouf Montreal. The bra label reads “Edith Lances”. Mme Nabina Malouf was born in Lebanon in 1885 and died in 1948. She was known primarily as a maker of lingerie but also of very expensive gowns. She also acted as an importer. Some of her garments are in the collection of the McCord Museum of Montreal.
Sizing: No size is indicated, and although this vintage 1940s dress should fit a medium size, please note the following measurements for fit:
Bust: 35” / Waist: 27 1/2” / Hips: 37” / Length: 48” from the top of the halter to the hemline
Condition: This vintage 1940s dress is in very good condition with no wear, tear, stains or odour - it looks like it saw little use and was well stored over the years. The added bra could be removed or replaced.
This is a gorgeous vintage 1940s dress and a wonderful piece of Montreal fashion history!
