Aristos Constantinou graduated from the London School of Fashion in 1965. His father was a master tailor located at 45 Carnaby Street and gave Aristos two rooms on the first floor of his shop. His brother Achilleas was still in school and had hippie friends who painted the doorway in psychedelic colors, attracting a young and eager clientele. The shop was an instant success right in the heart of the British mod fashion revolution. Because of his couture training, Aristos was able to offer avant garde designs and was the first British designer to offer couture on high street. In 1971, his company was renamed “Ariella” with Achilleas as sales manager. He developed a chenille fabric with which he designed a line of coats, jackets and skirts in a tone on tone striping - these coats are considered iconic to the period and were referred to as “the London Girl’s uniform”. Ariella is still in business today and run by Achilleas as Aristos was shot to death in 1985. It is suspected that his wife may have committed the murder, although no charges were ever brought.
This is one of the “iconic” chenille coats that were mentioned in the above bio. The coat features dark brown. medium brown, tan brown and black striping in diagonal patterning. It has a brown chenille pointed collar and over the elbow length sleeves. The coat does up at the waist with a single covered button and is secured closed with a matching brown belt. The skirt of the coat is cut with a flare to the bottom. The coat is lined in black rayon acetate. It is meant for evening use, not for cold or winter temperatures. This coat dates to the early 1970s.
