Vintage Horse Cowichan Sweater 1957 Mary Maxim Prairie Prancers 416 Ladies S M

$110.00

Brand Poppy's Vintage Clothing

This is an original vintage Mary Maxim sweater featuring a horse theme called “Prairie Prancers”, pattern number 416 for ladies, issued in 1957. Mary Maxim was an Ontario, Canada firm that expanded into the United States in 1956. They were known for their high quality knitting yarns and sweater designs. The pattern on this sweater is wonderful, with a prancing horse on either front side and two horses side by side on the back. There is a horse head on either sleeve and the pattern is framed by alternating orange and brown diamonds. There is a pocket built onto either lower front side. The sleeves are made in a raglan style and the background colour is a tan brown. The sweater is lined in a brown rayon fabric. The sweater does up with a metal zipper down the front. These types of sweaters are called Cowichans after a British Columbia native tribe called the Salish who live in the Cowichan Valley on Vancouver Island. They are also referred to as curling sweaters by the Canadians.
