This is an antique Georgian sewing etui that contains various compartments that would hold mending supplies.  This Georgian sewing etui box is made of red leatherette covered (probably paper based) wood.  It is decorated with gold embossing and has a lock, although the key is missing.  The interior lid is covered in yellow silk and has three compartments affixed to it that would have held tools, probably scissor and tweezers - a gold toned threader is still present.  There is a pin cushion at either side of the box that is made in the form of a box that states “Poems” on the spine.  The cover to the centre compartment is gold embossed with a bunch of grapes and the surrounding compartments hold a thimble, a candle, some pink and green threads, binding ribbon and a spool of white thread.  The wound threads might be original, but the spool is obviously not and I’m not sure about the steel thimble.  There is a small envelope tucked into one of the narrow compartments that reads “For Court pla(i)ster”.  Court plasters were beauty marks that gained popularity during the 18th century and evolved to become an early version of a band-aid, used not only for beauty, but to cover cuts and abrasions.

This Georgian sewing etui has some soiling to the silk and one of the ribbons that holds the lid in place when open is detached.  As already mentioned, some contents are missing and some are replaced.  But, in general, this Georgian sewing etui displays very well, especially considering its age, which I think is early 19th century, perhaps late Georgian or Regency period.

This is a rather unique Georgian sewing etui - amazing that it has endured in this condition given the use of paper and cardboard to make this.  Wonderful acquisition for the sewing collector!
