H&R Daniel was founded by Henry Daniel in 1822 - Daniel had previously had his own business within Spode that was responsible for enamelling and gilting Spodes china. This low comport features a hand painted lake scene with a small boat near a stone bridge and mountains in the background. The underside is hand inscribed with a description but most of the description is illegible except for the word Lake - I assume that this is a British lake. The comport is decorated with a satin cream finish around the painted scene and with raised detail at the edge, which is pierced and finished in gold gilt. Henry Daniels father Thomas was a colour maker for the English potteries at a time when the ceramics industry was young in England - only the largest potters could afford their own colour maker. Henry inherited Thomas recipes for colours and glazes, which proved to be a great benefit to his career. The R in H&R was Daniels son Richard who was made a partner in the business in 1826. H&R Daniel was considered to be on a par with the best porcelain makers in England, including Spode and Minton. It closed its doors due to insolvency in 1846. Due to its short life and because its production was unmarked, H&R Daniel was unappreciated for many years until research was done into its history during the late 1970s.
This piece measures 9 1/2 in diameter and 2 1/2 in height. I polished a small area of the interior side that is hidden by the mirror to show the silver colour (see last close-up photo). I believe that the original mirror is still in place - note the lime green coloured silvering on the back of the mirror. The piece measures 9 1/2 in height with a width of 4 1/2 at its widest. It is in very good condition except that the glass is missing a bit of silvering in two places and has a chip to the backside edge in one place, visible in the photos. H&R Daniel was founded by Henry Daniel in 1822 - Daniel had previously had his own business within Spode that was responsible for enamelling and gilting Spodes china. This low comport features a hand painted scene of someone fishing in a stream. The underside is hand inscribed with a description but most of the description is illegible except for the last word, which I believe reads Ambleside. Ambleside is located in Cumbria, Northwestern England and is built over the Stock Ghyll stream.
The Aesthetic movement was highly influenced by Japanese art and design - one can see the Japanese influence on the decoration of this plate. The marking on the underside of the plate was used after 1862 and before 1891. The album is made with a soft cover that folds over like a wallet, secured by a tongue in a slot. Each page holds one photo - there are 15 gem sized tintypes, each displayed within an oval opening that is surrounded by an embossed design. The display area measures 5/8 by 7/8. In addition to the 15 gem tintypes, there is one carte de visite. I didnt want to damage the page, so I didnt pull the carte de visite out, but it should give a clue as to the possible geographical origin of the album. The album measures 4 5/8 by 3 1/4 closed and has a thickness of 1. The album is in good condition with the exception of a torn piece at the top of the spine, a 1 1/4 tear along the fold of the cover and some slight edge wear (see photos). The tintypes are in very good condition except for two tintypes that have surface peeling, one of them missing some detail of the mans face (see close-up photos). Wilder was described as a hunchback dwarf and, although an American, was a favourite of the British Royal family - the Prince of Wales, eventually to become King Edward VII, saw Wilder performances close to twenty times. Although P.T. Barnum offered side show employment to him, Wilder chose instead to perform on the legitimate stage - disabled people were generally denied access to mainstream entertainment during the 19th century but Wilder was very successful, eventually becoming a Vaudevillian. The photo was taken Benjamin J Falk, a famous celebrity portrait photographer, located in the Madison Square area of New York, which was the centre of New York theatre life. It has a metal base and metal top (see photos). The base is affixed with rod that runs up through the glass body and through a metal grate that is situated in the middle of the body. Page three features a list of characters and page 170 lists the solo arias and duets of each act. Pages 171 and 172 lists the subscribers to the score, and which subscribers ordered the Imperial Paper version.
