This is a rare first edition of three volumes of A Monograph of the Works of McKim, Mead and White (1879-1915), an important New York based architectural firm. White was Stanford White, known for his Beaux-Arts designs for the rich and famous of the Gilded Age, and who gained notoriety after being shot and killed by Harry Thaw, over Whites relationship with Thaws wife Evelyn Nesbit. McKim, Mead and White were responsible for many major commercial and civic projects as well as private residences. Among the many important projects, were the Pennsylvania Station, the Brooklyn Museum, the main campus of Columbia University, the Boston Public University, the renovated West and East wings of the White House, the second Madison Square Garden, the Villard Houses, The Washington Arch, the Bank of Montreal, the Charles Tiffany house and many others. Originally, this set consisted of four volumes, each containing 100 full page plates measuring 14 by 20. Missing from the set is volume 3, which contains plates 200 to 299. These volumes were published by the Architectural Book Publishing Co (Paul Wenzel and Maurice Krakow) of New York in 1915. They have soft covers that have deteriorated over the years, so the folio pages are detached from the spine. The contents, however, are basically in good condition overall - some pages may have small edge tears, chipping, edge toning or moisture staining, but the large majority are clean. Included in the folio sheets are photographs, plans and elevations to scale. Im limited to 10 photos, so cannot show you many of the fabulous plates in these volumes, but these are very interesting architectural plates. Worth having the covers restored - beautiful photos of both exteriors and interiors and detailed architectural plans, sold at a very reasonable price given their rarity!
