This is an authentic WW1 Swiss army medic pea coat worn by a member of the Swiss military.  Switzerland was neutral during WW1, but due to its association with the International Red Cross, they supplied medical services to the wounded of both sides in the war.  WW1 Swiss army physicians worked in military hospitals on both sides of the front and from 1916 until the end of the war, some 68,000 wounded British, German and French soldiers were transported back to Switzerland to recover.  This WW1 Swiss army medic pea jacket is made of heavyweight wool tin a greenish grey colour.  There are 10 brass buttons arranged in a double breasted fashion on the front plus a button under right collar and two buttons under the left collar that are holding a neck bridge that is still present.  There are four buttons on the belt on the back and a button on each shoulder epaulet as well as a button closing either flapped patch pocket.  All buttons have a WW1 Swiss army raised cross and is stamped on the backside with “O. Schaerer Bern”.  There is a brass hook at either side used to hold, most likely, bag or other supplies.  The coat is lined on the upper back only.  There is handwriting on the interior including “1-15”, which I believe is a WW1 Swiss army date code for January 1915.

Sizing: This WW1 Swiss army jacket is a size small, probably about a US size 34, but please rely on the following measurements for fit (please take the thickness of the wool and the style of the piece into consideration):

Shoulders: 17 1/2” across shoulder seam-to-seam

Sleeves: 24” from shoulder seam, 33” from the mid neck

Sleeve Inseam: 18 1/2” long

Chest: 38” around

Waist: 36” around

Overall length:  28” around, measured flat at the back from the neck seam

Condition: This WW1 Swiss army medic pea coat has been very well preserved.  All buttons are present and there is no noted wear to the wool, staining, soiling or odour.

This is a wonderful example of a WW1 Swiss army medic pea coat - not a common thing, especially in this condition!
