Vintage 1980s Rei Kawakubo Mens Overcoat Oversize Fashion Medium Coat Made Japan

Brand Poppy's Vintage Clothing

This is a vintage men’s overcoat made by Japanese avant-garde designer Rei Kawakubo.  Kawakubo established her label “Comme des Garcons” in 1969, aimed at establishing a line for women that had the mobility and comfort of “boys” (garcons) clothing.  During the late 1970s, she established a professional and romantic relationship with Yohji Yamamoto, the two, in 1981, presenting separate, but ideologically similar, concepts of deconstructing traditional fashion design.   The label that appears on this coat was used during the 1980s - Kawakubo now offers menswear under the “Comme des Garcons Homme” label.  The design of the coat is tame compared to some of her more avant-garde designs, but beautifully made of quality wool tweed fabric in an oversized style that was popular during the 1980s. It has a small squared collar, raglan style sleeves, a four button front closure hidden by a flap, plus a visible button at the neck, and a slash pocket at either side.  The body of the coat is cut with a slight flare to the hemline, allowing the fabric to fall in drapes.  There is a two button adjustable belt on either cuff.  It is fully lined in a black rayon lining fabric. There is one pocket built into either side of the interior fabric.

Label: Rei Kawakubo

Color: Tones of white and black

Sizing: Size M for medium is indicated, but it made in an oversized style - the designer’s intention was for this to hang loosely on the body, but a large size could probably wear this - in any case, please rely on the following measurements for fit:

Shoulders and sleeves: 32” long taken from the collar seam

Sleeve Inseam: 20” long

Chest: 58”, taken under the arms

Waist: 61”

Hips:  62”

Overall length: 64”, measured flat

Condition: It is in very good condition with some small pulls to the tweed in places, very minor.  Otherwise, the coat is very clean, intact with no other wear or tear, and ready to be used

This is a wonderful men’s overcoat, made at a time that Rei Kawakubo was becoming famous for her radical fashion designs - nice collectible coat!
