This is a wonderful vintage cotton caftan dating most likely to the 1970s, possibly 1960s, featuring a batik like block print in tones of blue, teal, orange, yellow and white against a red background.  There is no label, but likely this was made in India.  It is very loose fitting, made with no closures so is meant to simply fit over the head.  There is some smocking across the front from underarm to underarm, and there are no sleeves per se, only openings at the side of the garment that allows for the free movement of the arms.

Size: No size is indicated, and although this should fit a range of sizes, please note the following measurements.  Laying the shoulders out straight, similar to a kimono, it measures 45” across the top from end to end.  The bust area measures 42” across, or 84” around - of course, this would accommodate the arms as well as the torso and would be loose fitting.  The length of the garment is 58“, measured lying flat.

Condition: It is in very good condition with no wear, tear, staining or odour - this looks to have seen little use and was well stored over the years.  You’ll note some whitish “dots” in the red background in a few places, but this was original to the fabric being printed, typical of Indian production process.

This is an amazing piece, great for wearing to festivals or the beach - comfy cotton, attractive colour, hippy pattern!
