This is a wonderful 1970s era winter coat made by the James Bay Mfg. Inc. (aka The James Bay Coat & Blanket Corporation). The coat is made of beige blanket wool that is hand embroidered with appliqués of various representations of wildlife. James Bay is the southernmost part of Hudson’s Bay and was the site of the first Hudson’s Bay trading post in 1668. The James Bay Coat & Blanket Corporation was set up, I believe, during the 1960s, and employed Northern Aboriginal people to stitch and apply appliqués to the coats. The coat is modeled somewhat on the traditional Inuit coat with a hood and straight cut body with mid thigh length. There is an applied patch pocket built onto either side, each decorated with a bird appliqué, I believe meant to be eagles, and embroidered around the edge in red and black wool stitching. The bottom back is decorated with deer in a forest with mountains and the sun in the background. The coat is lined in a quilted black fabric. The sleeves have elasticized interior cuffs and are finished in leather at the ends. The heavy gauge nylon zipper is configured for a man with the pull on the left.

It should fit a medium tall (note the sleeve length) to large size, depending on if you wish to wear a sweater or jacket underneath - please check the following measurements for fit, taking the thickness of the wool and the style of the jacket into account:

Shoulders: 21” across seam-to-seam

Sleeves: 28” long

Sleeve Inseam: 20 1/2” long

Chest: 52”, taken under the arms

Waist: 50”

Overall length: 54”, measured flat

It is in very good condition with no pronounced wear, tear, staining or soiling. This is a really nice example of a James Bay blanket coat - wonderful embroidered appliqués, sure to be noticed!
