$120.00

Brand Poppy's Vintage Clothing

This is a vintage 1970s mens coat or overcoat made under the Crombie Sabelere brand name by Freedman of Montreal Canada.  Freedman was founded in 1906 by Lyon Cohen and went on to become one of Montreal’s largest clothing manufacturers - Friedman was the maiden name of his wife.  As an aside, Lyon Cohen’s grandson was poet Leonard Cohen, who briefly worked at the company during the 1950s.  The coat is made of fine quality virgin wool in a colour so dark blue that it looks black - maybe it is black but with a bluish cast.  It has wide notched lapels and does up with three buttons at the front.  There is a flapped patch pocket at either side.  The shoulders are squared and padded and the sleeves have a single button at each cuff.  It has a 18 1/2” kick vent at the back and the coat is fully lined in a black satin acetate fabric.

Label: Crombie Sabelere Pure Virgin Wool Tailored by Freedman CA 00073.  Sabelere was a registered brand name of JJ Crombie of Aberdeen, Scotland.

Union label: ACWA - Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America that was in use from 1962 until 1976

Retailer label:  Chas. Johnson & Son Inc. Custom Tailors
