Vintage 1950s Brown Wool Gabardine Overcoat Mens Size L
Brand Poppy's Vintage Clothing
This is a wonderful gabardine overcoat made in brown - it perhaps would be referred to as whipcord due to the steeper twill than normally seen on gabardine. The style of lapel on this gabardine overcoat came into vogue in 1949 - until then peaked lapels and double breasted styles were popular, so I believe that this piece dates to the early 50s. The coat has inset sleeves and an interesting collar and lapel - the collar is curved, pointy and extends past the high set lapel. The coat has a diagonal pocket built into either side and a 17” kick vent at the centre back. It closes with three buttons down the front. It is fully lined in a brown coloured rayon satin fabric.
Sizing: No size is indicated on this gabardine overcoat, but this should fit a large size, probably a US size 42, maybe 44 depending on whether you want to wear a jacket underneath - please rely on the following measurements for fit, taken from the exterior (please take the thickness of the fabric and the cut of the garment into consideration):
Shoulders: 20” across seams at the upper back
Sleeves: 25 1/2” from the shoulder/sleeve seam
Sleeve Inseam: 17 1/2” long
Chest: 48” around, taken under the arms
Waist: 46” around
Overall length: 42", measured flat at the back from the neck sea
Condition: This gabardine overcoat is in very good condition with no pronounced wear, tear, staining or odours - there is a bit of wear to the top buttonhole, very minor (see last close-up photo). Clean and well stored over the years.
This is a nice 50s era gabardine overcoat - getting hard to find older wool gabardine overcoats like this!
