This is a beautiful quality vintage Gieves tuxedo shirt made in England probably during the 1960s. This vintage Gieves tuxedo shirt features a white bib front and barrel cuffs. It requires a detachable collar as none is provided. It requires shirt studs and cufflinks. The cotton is of excellent quality in a linen like finish.
Label: Gieves Limited London W.I. with Royal Warrants granted by the Duke of Edinburgh and Her Majesty the Queen.
Gieves has a long history dating back to a partnership formed in 1852 - it was formed into a limited company in 1887 when James Watson Gieve bought out his partner. They were primarily a military and naval supplier, but evolved into a bespoke tailor for gentlemen. Gieves was located at 27 Bond St. London, so technically they were not a Savile Row tailor, although they were located within 2 blocks of Savile Row. In 1974, they acquired Hawkes & Co., which was located at No 1 Savile Row, so then officially became a Savile Row tailor.
Sizing: Size 15 1/2” is indicated at the back of the neck. The shoulders measure 18” across from seam to seam, the chest measures 23” across pit to pit (46” around) with a 34 inch long sleeve from the mid-neck, 25” long from the shoulder seam.
Condition: This vintage Gieves tuxedo shirt is in very good condition with the exception of some tearing to the top button hole (see close-up photo). Otherwise, the shirt was found in its original dry cleaning bag (see photo) and is clean with no noted stains or other wear.
This is a wonderful vintage Gieves tuxedo shirt - excellent Savile Row quality, all it needs is a collar and maybe a couple of stitches at the top button hole!
