Antique Pictorial Hooked Rug Heron Pattern Maine Waldoboro Wall Hanging Large

Brand Poppy's Vintage Clothing

This is a wonderful antique pictorial hooked rug made in a design that features a wading Heron as the central subject with water lily flowers, bullrushes and even a butterfly appearing within the design.  The water lily flowers are raised in the Waldoboro style - Waldoboro is a town in Maine where the technique of creating hooked rugs with raised detailing was developed.

The rug was created as a showpiece to be displayed on a wall.  There are black cloth loops affixed to the top edge of the piece so that it can be displayed hanging from a rod.  It would have been produced by a highly skilled artisan or even a group of artisans - there is a lot of work that went into producing this piece.  It has a burlap backing.  I believe that it was produced during the early part of the 20th century.

It measures 51” wide by 29” high and is in very good condition with excellent colours and no wear or tear except for a small tear to the burlap backing, really minor.  This has been very well preserved.

This is a very desirable hooked rug - beautiful addition to the right décor!
