This is a superior quality men’s jacket/blazer made in a brown silk velvet fabric by Savile Row tailor Norton & Sons - read further below for details on Norton & Sons.  The tailor’s label dates the jacket to June of 1970.  The jacket has padded shoulders, peaked lapels and a flapped pocket at either side.  The jacket has a breast pocket and closes with a single  button at the waist - there is a two button configuration, so that you can close the jacket either to the right or left.  It also has four buttons at either cuff.  The jacket is fully lined with brown rayon taffeta fabric.  Norton is known for using only the best fabrics, often sourced from Scottish mills.

Tailor’s label:  Norton & Sons 20, Conduit St. London W.I. (now located around the corner at 16 Savile Row).  The original owner’s name is shown but I won’t replicate it here for privacy reasons - it is quite posh sounding however.

Norton & Sons was established in 1821 by Walter Norton and moved to the Savile Row area during the 1860s. From the Norton & Sons website is the following:

Norton & Sons continued to thrive in the 20th century and in the latter half incorporated the celebrated Savile Row houses Hammond & Co, J. Hoare & Co, E. Tautz & Sons and Todhouse Reynard & Co. We are proud to have been tailors to the royal households of Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Italy, Prussia, Spain, Portugal and the United Kingdom, and to three US Presidents.

The firm gained eminence as a sporting tailor, making sharply cut garments for rugged and robust outdoorsmen. Men such as King Edward VII, Wilfred Thesiger and the young Winston Churchill, for whom we made everything from dinner suits to racing silks.  With a long history of tailoring to clients bound for Africa, India and the near East Norton & Sons developed an expertise in lightweight clothing; Lord Carnarvon wore Nortons when he opened Tutankhamen's tomb.

Norton & Sons clothed many of the best dressed men of the last century, including Cary Grant, King George V, and Anthony J Drexel Biddle, the first man to be named America’s Best Dressed Man. The house enjoyed a long association with the famed British Couturier Hardy Amies and to this day Norton & Sons works closely with the fashion industry of London, New York, and Paris, cutting and sewing tailored pieces for long list of celebrated designers.”

Norton & Sons makes a limited number of bespoke suits per year, estimated at about 300, much less than other Savile Row tailors who often produce 1000.

Sizing: Being bespoke (custom made) no size is indicated - it should fit a large (about a 42) and tall size, tall except for the sleeves, so please rely on the following measurements for fit, taken from the exterior of the piece:

Shoulders:  19” across from shoulder seam to shoulder seam

Sleeves:  25 1/2” long

Sleeve Inseam:  18” long

Chest:  46” around, taken under the arms

Waist:  40” around

Overall length: 33" measured laying flat

Condition:  It is in very good condition with no pronounced wear, tear, stains or odours - a couple of tiny light velvet matte marks, but these would be resolved by a dry cleaning.  Otherwise, this jacket looks like it saw little use and was well cared for over the years.

This is a beautiful quality jacket by a renowned Savile Row bespoke tailor.  The velvet on this jacket has to be felt - it is extremely soft, just gorgeous!  1970 dated model, very sharp - superb acquisition if it fits properly....
