This is a vintage jumpsuit designed by Jean Muir, probably during the 1980s, but possibly during the late 70s.  Jean Muir is considered one of Britain’s greatest fashion designers.  She studied fashion sketching at St Martin’s School of Art while working at Liberty, and went on to work at Jacqmar and then Jaeger.  After designing for the Jane & Jane label for four years, she started a label under her own name in 1966.

This jumpsuit is quite wonderful and is typical of Jean Muir - basic solid black in a jersey fabric with no ornamentation and great attention to fit and detailing.  The shoulders are padded and there are seams and tucks that go over the shoulder from front to back.  The bodice does up with six buttons and there are an additional two button closure should you wish the wish the collar close to the neck - I’ve posed the collar done up, but you can wear it down.  The sleeves are cut full and have long cuffs that are tight to the wrist.  The pant legs are cut wide and are very long.  The fabric has good weight and falls beautifully, but the waist would need to be cinched with a belt of your choosing.  There is a pocket built into either side at the hip level - Muir would often place pockets at the hip, as she believed that this would aid the wearer to maintain better posture.

Label: Jean Muir London

Color: Black

Material: Viscose (Rayon) Jersey

Sizing: US size 12 and UK size 14 are indicated, and although this should fit a large size, please note the measurements provided, noting length in particular:

Shoulders:  16” across from one shoulder/sleeve seam to the other shoulder/sleeve seam

Sleeves:  27” long from the shoulder/sleeve seam

Sleeve inseam:  21”

Bust: 42” around

Waist: 42” around, uncinched - would benefit from the use of a belt

Hips:  44” around

Length: 62”, measured flat

Leg inseam:  31 1/2”

Condition:  Unfortunately, this has condition problems.  There are about six pinhead holes to the back of the piece (see second to last close-up photo for three of them) and there are some holes to the right cuff (see last close-up photo).  But, a good seamstress should be able to repair these - the pinholes at the back aren’t really noticeable, but the cuff would need some sort of repair.

Despite the damage, this is still a fabulous example of Jean Muir - super styling and quality fabric, excellent acquisition for the serious collector.....
