Vintage Harris Tweed Mens Jacket Montague Burton 1950s Tailored Country Size M L

Brand Poppy's Vintage Clothing

This is a vintage Harris tweed jacket or sport coat that was made by Montague Burton Ltd of Great Britain, probably during the 1950s.  The tailor’s cardboard tag has “43/1/4” handwritten on it, and although one might surmise that the jacket dates to 1943 from this, the lapel style is more in keeping with the 1950s.  The original Burton fabric label is removed, but you can still see the Burton impression in the lining - this impression and the square dimensions point to the label that was used during the 1950s.  The fabric is tightly woven in a combination of teal and brown tones which gives the jacket an overall appearance of a muted brownish green.  The jacket is tailored with a fitted waist and padded shoulders.  It has a flapped pocket at either side as well as an extra smaller pocket at the right side and a pocket at the left chest.  It has medium width notched lapels and closes with three plastic buttons at the front.  There are four similar smaller buttons at either cuff and the back bottom has a double vent.   The jacket is fully lined in a twilled grey satin acetate fabric.  It has a pocket built into the interior at the right side and an unusual large pocket with an attached strap at the lower left interior (see last photo) - this must have some specific purpose, perhaps hunting related, but I’m really unsure.

Fabric label:  Harris Tweed label with the authentic mark of the Orb

Fabric: 100% Scottish Wool tweed - thicker than usual, very substantial

Sizing: There is no size but from my experience American sizing on jackets is usually 4” smaller than chest size, so this would be about a size 40/42 - please rely on the following measurements for fit (compare measurements with a similar jacket that you presently own or to your own body measurements, taking the cut of the garment into account):

Shoulders: 19 1/2” across from shoulder/sleeve seam to shoulder/sleeve seam

Sleeves: 26” from the shoulder/sleeve seam

Sleeve inseam: 18 1/2”

Chest:  46” around, taken under the arms

Waist:  41” around

Overall length:  29 1/2”, measured flat

Condition:  It is in very good condition with no stains, odors, wear or tears - this jacket looks to have seen very little use and has been well cared for over the years.

This is a well tailored jacket made with a beautiful quality tweed fabric in a heavier weight - many years of use left in this, great jacket!
