This is a fabulous kimono dress made by Hanae Mori during the 1970s. Hanae Mori is known for her kimono dresses, and this one is a striking example featuring dramatic sleeves and a black and white leaf pattern with tan colored stems. It has many of the design features of a kimono. It closes with snaps at the neckline and waist, has a more fitted body than a kimono, and, instead of an obi, has a tasseled black sash that cinches the waist, printed with “Hanae Mori” in three places in reversed white text. The dress is unlined.

Label: Hanae Mori Tokyo. Hanae Mori started her career during the 1950s, specializing in costume design for Japanese films. After meeting Coco Chanel in 1960, she aspired to design Haute Couture clothing and presented her first collection in 1965. In 1977 she opened her Paris atelier and became the first Asian fashion designer to be admitted as a haute couture design house by the Federation Francaise de la Couture. She was highly regarded in Japan and used techniques garnered from both Asian and Western fashion design to arrive at an East/West fusion in her garments. Her clothes were worn by Princess Grace of Monaco, Hillary Clinton and Nancy Reagan.
