This is a wonderful antique wood shoe last that is stamped on its side with “D Shoemaker 227 Callowhill St Philada”.  Records show Daniel Shoemaker as having been a “lastmaker”, residing at 227 Callowhill Street, Philadelphia, and having made shoe lasts from 1858 until 1868.  The last is for the left foot only - unfortunately, I do not have the right foot last.  It measures 11” in length, so was meant for an adult.  It has a hole drilled through it at the back, I assume meant for hanging the piece, and one drilled into the top back, probably meant to somehow aid in working the last.  The wood has been stained brown - the color of the original wood can be seen in the top hole.  The piece is in very good condition with some defects to the wood, nothing unexpected for a shoe last of this age (please view the enlarged photos).  This is an interesting piece of Philadelphia history.....
