This is a wonderful Grenfell Handicrafts parka coat also known as an Inuit anorak that was handmade in Labrador and Newfoundland.  The Grenfell mission was established in 1892 by Dr Wilfred Grenfell to provide medical services to the impoverished population of Newfoundland and Labrador, which consisted primarily of fishermen, their dependents, and the Inuit / native aboriginals.  The mission established a “village industry department”, which had as an aim to provide employment and fund the mission.  One of the endeavours, aside from the establishment of lumber mills and agriculture, was a handicraft industry that became famous for its hooked rugs.  The handicraft industry still exists today, but this is an older Grenfell Handicrafts parka, probably dating to the 1960s.

This Grenfell Handicrafts parka has a brown Grenfell cloth exterior.  Grenfell cloth is a densely woven cotton gabardine that was created in 1923.  Its purpose is to be rain, snow and wind resistant and the wool interior is meant to provide warmth.  It was produced in England by T. Haythornthwaite & Sons company and woven with 600 threads per inch.  It is hand embroidered in tones of orange, brown, copper, green, yellow and white with Inuit/Eskimo figures on a sleigh.  It is constructed with a hood that is trimmed with off-white fox fur.  It does up the front with a Lightning metal zipper.  There is a pocket at either side.  This Grenfell Handicrafts parka is fairly light yet should provide good warmth - perhaps would require a thick sweater for very cold weather.  This Grenfell Handicrafts parka should fit a size small to medium, but please rely on the following measurements for fit: Please note you need to allow more inches if you measure yourself than you see given below.  It would be best to measure a coat you may have and compare as these would normally be worn with a sweater, so you need to allow for the extra inches that may be required.

Shoulders:  17 3/4” across shoulder seams

Sleeves:  23 3/4” from shoulder seam

Sleeve Inseam:  18”

Bust:  43” around

Bottom:  45” around

Overall length:  31”, measured flat

Condition: This Grenfell Handicrafts parka is in very good condition with no pronounced wear, tear or staining.  Very clean, this looks to have seen little use and has been well kept and stored over the years.

This is a wonderful original Grenfell Handicrafts parka - gorgeous purple colour, striking handmade piece!
