This is a vintage 1940s era suit made of black wool, probably dating to during WWII due to its style, but also because colours were difficult to acquire during the war as Germany had been the source of the best fabric dyes and that supply had been interrupted.  The jacket of this suit has padded, squared shoulders typical of the 1940s, high set, fairly narrow pointed collar and lapels, and a four button closure.  It has a longer silhouette with a slightly accented waistline.  The sleeves are made in a full length.  The skirt has a lower-calf length, flares to the hemline, has pleating at the back, does up with a metal zipper at the side, and is unlined.

Label: Eaton’s Suit Shop.  Eaton’s was Canada’s largest and most established department store chain.  It offered such a variety of goods that it could actually have a separate shop within its walls just for suits.

Sizing: No size is indicated, but this should fit a large size.   Please note the following measurements, taking the style of the suit into account:

Jacket:

Shoulders: 18” across seam-to-seam

Sleeves: 23” from shoulder seam

Sleeve Inseam: 16” long

Bust: 42” around, taken under the arms

Waist: 36 1/2” around

Overall length: 28”

Skirt:

Waist: 31”

Hips: 42” around

Overall length: 31"

Condition:  It is in very good condition with no pronounced wear, tear, stains or odours. The waistband of the skirt is not finished well but this is quite minor, just needs to be pressed.  Otherwise, this suit looks to have seen little use and was well stored over the years.

This is a nice period suit - rather chic style!
