This is a pair of 1920s vintage ladies stockings made in Canada by Penman’s.  Penman’s started in 1868 as a wool knitting mill located in Paris, Ontario and became known for quality hosiery and underwear, including “long johns” - it still is in business today.  These came out of an old general store and are old store stock, never used.  They are still held together with a price ticket that reads “X=2 1.75”.  The foot is printed with “Fashioned Hose Botany Wool & Cotton Reinforced Sole No Seam Comfort Foot” - the toe is printed “Penman’s 9 1/2”.  Botany wool was a term used during the late 19th century for merino wool originating from Botany Bay in Australia.  It continued to be used commonly through to the 1920s, and although it was used subsequently, it was mostly replaced with the generic term “merino wool” after the 1920s. The stockings are made in a coral or salmon pink colour.  As mentioned, they would fit an average foot, sized as 9 1/2.  They measure 30 1/2” from the top to the bottom of the heel and the foot measures 9 1/2” in length from the back of the heel to the toe.  They are unused, but have some soiling, mostly visible at the top of one stocking (see last close-up photo) - I didn’t want to wash them as they are unused and held together by their price ticket, but they should come out clean with a proper laundering (be careful to follow guidance on washing and drying wool and cotton fabric like this).    This is a rare find - wonderful colour, great flapper era hosiery!
