Vintage 80s Couture Ball Gown - Elizabethan Style

Brand Poppy's Vintage Clothing

This is a vintage 1980s era two piece ensemble or ball gown made by Montreal couturier Serge et Real

Label: Serge et Real Montreal

It consists of a skirt and top that have a fairy tale princess-like appearance, very Victorian in conception, and very appropriate for wear to a ball or formal function.  The skirt and sleeves of the top are made of a fine silk that is woven in a paisley pattern.  The body of the top is made of quilted purple taffeta.  The shoulders are very padded, typical of 80s fashion and the sleeves are made in a gigot/leg of mutton style, very wide at the top and narrow at the cuff.  It does up with 19 matching covered buttons down the front.  The skirt is cut full with a lot of gathering at the waist band.  It has a purple taffeta underskirt and yellow tulle stiffening

Color: Gold yellow and purple with touches of red and green in the weave

Material: Silk and taffeta - highest quality fabrics were used in making this dress.

(Serge Senecal and Real Bastien) in a style that appears to take inspiration from Elizabethan fashion.  Serge et Real had been in business since 1972, now retired.  They had dressed Canadian high society including the wife of a former Canadian prime minister, a former Canadian governor general, Quebec entertainers and wives of captains of industry.  Both apprenticed at Parisian design houses during the 1960s and decided to open a couture business in Montreal at a time when pret a porter was cutting deeply into couture.  They worked in Palm Beach and New York as well as out of their Westmount atelier, but recently retired.  Their creations could cost many thousands of dollars and this was probably a very expensive dress.

This is a super quality ensemble - Serge and Real produces only couture, so this is a hand made ensemble with a lot of attention to detail.  This was a very expensive piece to buy new, probably costing many thousands of dollars.  The fabric is of exceptional quality.....great piece for a ball or formal function.
