From the early 1970s here's a black velour maxi coat by Givenchy. It is a stylized trench coat. This was for his ready to wear Nouvelle Boutique line which was established back in 1968. It is made of a black velour fabric which is textured and thus gives the appearance of having a flecked line running through it. It is double breasted and does up with eight leather buttons which do up with leather loops, there are no buttonholes. The cuffs also have the leather button. It is piped with black leather trim. It is fully lined in a black satin acetate. There are two side pockets.

The label reads Made in France – Givenchy – Nouvelle Boutique – Paris. It was purchased at the Ensemble shop for Eaton's Canada. This was the high-end boutique shop that was in the Eaton's Department Store at that time.

Please note the measurements and measure yourself or a coat you are comfortable in to be certain for sizing, all given in inches.

Bust - 38

Waist - 34

Hips - 40

Shoulders - 16 ½

Sleeve - 23

Overall Length - 53

It's in very good condition. There is some wearing of the leather on the buttons and the stitching on the back of the left arm at the back of shoulder area had come undone for 3 inches in length and it was restitched but not well done. I just noted this when describing it now, not a serious issue as there is no tearing.

A bit of information about the designer.  Hubert de Givenchy opened his couture design house in France back in 1952 at the age of 25. He had worked with Jacques Fath, Lucien Lelong, Robert Piquet and Elsa Schiaparelli. In 1953 he met Cristobal Balenciaga who became his mentor and friend. In 1954 he began designing the costumes for Audrey Hepburn who became his muse and model and continued wearing his designs throughout her life. He also designed for Jackie Kennedy.

This is an easy to wear coat.  A classic vintage coat to add to your collection.
