This is a 1940s era mens wool coat that I’ve been able to date stylistically to about 1944, with help from one of my colleagues from the Vintage Fashion Guild - thank you, Carrie!  That being said, there are some similarities in style to late 1930s coats, but the lapels are a bit more extreme, so we’ve decided on 1940s.  The coat has wide peaked lapels with the bottom notch being cut with a horizontal top edge.  It has padded shoulders, typical of 1940s styling and is more fitted through the body than shown by being on the mannequin form.  It has six buttons at the front arranged in a double breasted style and side pockets.  It is half lined.  You can tell that this may be a wartime coat as the wool has a few small beige specks in it here and there and the wool appears to be less finely processed.  Materials were rationed during the war so that they could be diverted to the war effort, so this might explain the appearance of the wool.  The wool is thick and tightly woven, superior to anything made in more recent decades.

Age: c 1944

Label: None.  This coat was probably custom tailored

Color: Midnight blue, so dark that it is practically black or deep charcoal gray with a blue tone

Material: Wool

Sizing: No size is indicated, but this should fit a medium to large size (40/42) - please rely on the following measurements for fit, taken from the exterior (please take the thickness of the wool into consideration):

Shoulders: 18 1/2” across shoulder seam-to-seam

Sleeves: 25 1/2” from shoulder seam

Sleeve Inseam: 17 1/2” long

Chest: 44” around, taken under the arms

Waist: 44” around

Hips:  46” around

Overall length: 46", measured flat

Condition:  This coat is in very good condition - there is some nappe wear (finish wear) at the edges, but this is quite minor .  Otherwise, this coat has been well stored and cared for over the years.

This is a wonderful 1940s era coat that would work very well in a film or play or just a great coat to wear!
